The Automotive Technician plays a crucial role in providing high-quality vehicle maintenance and repair services. This position involves diagnosing complex automotive issues, performing repairs, conducting routine maintenance, and effectively communicating with customers regarding vehicle needs. 

Responsibilities: 

Diagnosis and Troubleshooting: 

  • Inspect vehicles thoroughly to identify problems, often utilizing computerized diagnostic equipment (e.g., scan tools, multimeters) to read and interpret diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). 
  • Conduct comprehensive tests on various vehicle systems, including engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, suspension, electrical systems, HVAC, and emissions. 
  • Analyze test results, technical manuals, and service bulletins to determine the root cause of malfunctions. 

Repair and Maintenance: 

  • Perform a wide range of repairs, including but not limited to, replacing worn or faulty components such as brake pads, wheel bearings, sensors, belts, hoses, and filters. 
  • Execute repairs to manufacturer and customer specifications, adhering to industry best practices. 
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, fluid level checks, tire rotations, and tune-ups. 
  • Repair or replace engine management systems, fuel systems, ignition systems, and other complex components. 
  • Conduct wheel alignments and balancing using specialized equipment. 
  • Overhaul or rebuild faulty assemblies (e.g., power steering systems, linkages, transmissions). 

Job Requirements: 

Technical Skills and Knowledge: 

  • Comprehensive Automotive Systems Knowledge: In-depth understanding of how engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, suspension, electrical systems, HVAC, fuel systems, and emissions systems function. 
  • Diagnostic Proficiency: Ability to effectively use computerized diagnostic equipment (scan tools, oscilloscopes), interpret diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), and analyze live data to pinpoint issues. 
  • Tool Proficiency: Skill in using a wide range of hand tools, power tools, specialized automotive tools, and precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, gauges). Must have own tools. 
  • Repair and Maintenance Techniques: Competence in performing various repairs, from routine maintenance (oil changes, tire rotations) to complex component replacement and rebuilding. 
  • Reading Technical Information: Ability to accurately read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, service bulletins, and manufacturer specifications. 
  • Computer Literacy: Basic computer skills for accessing diagnostic software, repair databases, ordering parts, and maintaining digital records.

  • Problem-Solving and Analytical Skills: Strong ability to diagnose complex and sometimes intermittent vehicle issues, troubleshoot systematically, and determine root causes. 
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulousness in inspecting vehicles, performing repairs, and ensuring all steps are completed accurately and safely. 
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication to explain complex technical issues to customers in a clear, understandable way, and to effectively collaborate with colleagues and service advisors. 
  • Customer Service Orientation: A commitment to providing excellent service, building rapport with customers, and addressing their concerns professionally. 
  • Physical Stamina and Dexterity: The ability to lift heavy objects, stand for long periods, bend, stoop, kneel, and work in various confined spaces. Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity are crucial. 
  • Time Management and Organization: Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize work, and maintain a clean and organized workspace.
